Borgo Filari lies in the south of Piedmont, on the banks of the River Erro and close to the medieval village of Melazzo — a beautifully restored wine farm turned quiet luxury retreat. It's an ideal base for visiting Turin, Genoa, and Milan, and perfectly placed for a day at the Mediterranean coast. The Langhe and Monferrato wine region, with its storied towns of Alba, Asti, and Barolo, sits just an hour away.
The original farmhouse — now home to the estate's two largest apartments — was restored over more than four years, with an eye for detail and for the past. Every stone was removed, cleaned, and set back in place; where more were needed, they were sourced from the estate's own grounds. New wooden window frames and shutters were fitted, and the whole property runs on underfloor heating. Original terracotta floors remain throughout, and the old oak beams were refurbished and treated against woodworm. The roof was rebuilt entirely, insulated, and finished with the estate's original clay tiles.
Each bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom, with a walk-in shower, a separate freestanding bathtub, and — in several rooms — its own fireplace. Every apartment has a fully equipped kitchen with modern appliances, along with a lounge set, a hammock, and a dining table with barbecue.
Alongside the restored farmhouse, two further apartments were later built beside the pool, with views across Val d'Erro. The same materials were used throughout — natural stone, terracotta floors, chestnut beams, clay roof tiles — carrying the same luxury and calm found across the rest of the estate.
Every apartment opens onto a portico of natural stone with Roman arches, or chestnut wood — a shaded place for a glass of wine or a long meal when the sun is too strong for the terrace. Two of these porticos double as balconies for the bedrooms of La Cantina and La Cuccia, opening onto views across Val d'Erro. The largest, at the heart of the estate, seats up to eighteen people and comes with its own professional kitchen — the natural gathering point for weddings, exclusive estate rentals, and long dinners with everyone at one table.
Long before it opened its doors to guests, this land was known locally as Ciapulin — a name older than any deed. Borgo Filari is newer: filari were the rows of vines that once belonged to the estate, grown on neighboring land rather than these slopes themselves. The estate is cared for today by the Baviera family, continuing a story written long before them, one season at a time.
